My Way

Made for myself

This is the cookbook I wanted and could not find: the recipes I actually cook, the way I actually cook them, with none of the childhood anecdotes or keyword padding that recipe sites use to rank first in search engines. It’s a tool, not a promotional vehicle.

But I like to share, so you are welcome here too. The recipe list is scarce, but growing. I doubt I’ll carry most of your favourite dishes, but hey, at least I will not ask you to subscribe to a newsletter, or pass a product advertisement disguised as a recipe, or track your activity across the site.

Made for a reason

Recipes in plain text

Every recipe is a CookLang file in a Git repository. No database maintenance headaches, just simple text and a static website. The source code is free to access and modify, and anyone can easily port my recipes to another app that supports the CookLang format.

Ingredient scaling

I grew tired of doing arithmetic in my head when the pan was already hot. I can change the serving count and every quantity follows, in the list and in the steps. The required quantity is right there in the step, no more scrolling up and down to figure out how much of the butter goes into the saucepan mid-cooking.

Step timers

Durations in a step are tappable. Several timers can run at once and they keep counting while I move between recipes, so I don’t have to remember which timer I had for the rice and which for the onions. And big buttons that I can hit with my wet fingers, my knuckles or, every so often, my nose.

Keep the screen on

A running timer stops the display from sleeping. Waking a phone with greasy hands is the single most annoying thing about cooking with one.

No accounts, no tracking, no ads

There is no analytics script and nothing to log in to. This is the default for most of my personal projects. Everything the site remembers — your servings, your timers, your ticked-off steps — never leaves your computer.
